Last Day Of Summer Event, September 21, 2021

The last day of summer was a gift from the Croquet God: clear sky, warm. Groundskeeper Miguel Miguel cropped the crocosmia bed thereby reducing an obstacle. Since the paddle out for him was cancelled, Lefty lent his considerable presence to the usual cast of senior characters. A suggestion that first aid kits be installed on both the lower and upper levels of the Mar-A-Lawno course was made after two Cowabungas taking blood thinners sustained weeping scratches searching for a ball launched into dense salal. Happily, the ball was found and the wounds were treated. For the record, wiping with a sweaty t-shirt and dousing with beer are NOT AMA recommended treatment options.

SOD game one: En route to the 8th wicket, Mr. Wicket's ball caromed off the deck foundation roqueting on Mallethead's ball. Then, Mr. Wicket sent Mallethead's ball through the 8th wicket thereafter roqueting on Mallethead again. Mention must be made of Mr. Wicket's looooong shot through the 10th wicket.

SOD game two: Wick O'Shay stroked a looooong shot through the 10th wicket.

Groovy fall day for croquet. Masks mandated. Six hour playlist actuated. Course #31 required many long shots. SODs awarded to Wick O'Shay for his long distance kill shot on Surferino in round one, and Mr. Wicket for his long distance kill shot to win round two.

A full complement of Cowabungas played two loooooong rounds at Mar-A-Lawno today on course #10. Whoever selected the course was devious and possibly demented. The start and finish wickets were devilishly difficult to enter and exit. But such difficulties made for interesting, horrific and extraordinary shots and plays. There were too many Shots-of-the-Day, SODs, to recount.  Long distance roquets, trick shots, bouncing beauties, jumpers, hoppers, through the rough setups, bashers, smashers, wicket climbers. Every player got used, confused, abused and reused. There was much laughter, false humility, sarcasm fake sincerity and balderdash plus flapdoodle, air guitar, tomfoolery. Nothing was sacred, standards were abandoned, entendres were tripled,  bawdiness begat risqueness, clothes were strewn about. No humans nor animals were hurt. It was a full on id show.

Wick won the first round. Mallethead won the second round. Attrition was the theme. Everyone stayed hydrated.

On a spectacular fall day, even though it was summer by the calendar, those who could make it played 3 rounds at Mar-A-Lawno on course #1. With only four players the rounds went quickly. The course was fast. Surferino won the first two rounds. Sticky Wicket won the last round.

Sticky would have been  awarded the SOD, Shot-of-the-Day, for his great shot from the 4th to the 5th wicket despite a constricted ball position. However, the SOD had to go to Surferino who stroked a once in a lifetime shot also from the 4th to the 5th wicket. With his red ball lying millimeters beyond the 4th wicket and with no decent conventional swing possible, Surferino straddled the 4th wicket with his back to the 5th wicket. Using a two-fisted grip high up the shaft, he swung his mallet through the 4th wicket between his legs sending his ball downhill with just enough momentum to softly nudge the yellow ball lying 14" from the 5th wicket for a roquet! You had to be there folks.

Droner, an out-of-towner who hadn't played croquet for quite some time, became increasingly competitive each round, nearly becoming Poison his last game. He also answered medical questions and dispensed advice about combating moles, voles and wild turkeys. A true Renaissance man.
