Claiming Lantern Bay Park
A Cowabunga foursome, Leftie, Mr. Wicket, Wick O'Shay and Surferino, set up a course on an expansive lawn at Lantern Bay Park. The park is situated on a bluff overlooking the Dana Point Marina and Doheny State Beach. Only a few winos and dingbats were present at the edges of the park.
The course was Scottish in that it was uneven, bumpy, hard and soft. It was also lengthy. The view was spectacular. The wind moderated during the afternoon and sunshine prevailed.
Leftie killed Mr. Wicket to win the first game. The second game ended in an historic and mutually agreed tie between Wick O'Shay, Mr. Wicket and Surferino. The tie was necessitated by the inability of the participants to hit each other with the extremely long shots required by the expansive course.
The croquet traveling set has now been packed and stowed for the long trip back to the sacred and exquisite Cowabunga home course.

Lefty, Mr. Wicket, Surferino and Wick O'Shay played on a plush course under a warm autumn sun. During the round, won by Surferino, Sticky Wicket arrived. Sticky agreed to play the second round.
Allegedly as a birthday present, Lefty missed kill shots on Surferino who survived to decimate the field. A win is a win is a win.

Two rounds were played by Leftie, Mr. Wicket, Wick O'Shay, Sticky Wicket and Surferino. Leftie won the first round after Mr. Wicket missed a kill shot thereby committing suicide. The second round was won by Sticky Wicket after Mrs. Sticky Wicket, not to be confused with Mr. Wicket's Mrs. Wicket, delivered and distracted players with delicious pecan, dried cherries and raisin zucchini bread. Marvelous and devious.

Today's Results
On perhaps the hottest day this summer, three rounds were played on the OC, original course. Five members, not including Mr. Balls, played. Two members, Leftie and Sticky Wicket, were shirtless sweat shredders. Luckily, a mister was provided by Mr. Wicket.
Despite not having played for weeks, Surferino charged from behind and won the first round. The second round was won by Sticky Wicket despite a disputed controversial kill shot on Leftie. Sticky also won, fair and square, the third round.

Cowabunga Lament
In the rain it goes away
Ain't no sunshine and it's gone
And our lives are not okay
Today there's no croquet

Fourth of July TOC (Tournament of Cowabungas)
Wilson Park was the venue of a lengthy round of croquet today. The Wilson Park course was challenging in its mounded unevenness, gravel, plus shrub and tree debris. It was fast and unforgiving, and quite hard on the balls. Shots were deflected, suffocated by the rough, often bounding upward. To illustrate the unusual nature of the Wilson Park course, the following conversation was overheard, "Where'd my ball go? It's down the hill to the left of the poop shed in the vines. Be careful."
Hosted by the southside contingent of the Club, Wilson Park is the polar opposite of the fabulous, Sunset Magazine centerfold, incomparable northside course. Surferino, Mr. Wicket, Leftie and Mallethead all became poison. Sticky Wicket and Wick O'Shay brexited early. Despite the challenging conditions and without a single beer ingested, Mr. Wicket eliminated Mallethead to win the round and hoist a Pacifico. Appetizers, fine wines and beers, and a barbecued steelhead dinner with many tasty side dishes plus desserts followed the game. June and July birthdays were toasted, as were some Cowabungas. An Argentinian Malbec was sampled and rated. Sticky Wicket surprised all by donning a fashionable, well-fitting SPF-rated fishing shirt. It was a great, fulfilling and satisfying day in the southland today.

The first round was won by Lefty who was focused and deadly. The second round was won by Sticky Wicket, who, although wilted, survived a charging Surferino.

Two rounds of croquet were played under a mostly sunny sky and stiff northwest wind. The course was well groomed, as usual, in the original or classic layout. The participants included, in no particular order, Mallethead, Sticky Wicket, Wick O'Shay, Surferino, Lefty and Mr. Wicket.
As usual, numbered tiles were drawn from the Crown Royal velvet bag to determine order of play.
The Club Auxiliary provided delicious snacks like pizza fresco, veggies and dip, watermelon, lemon drop tartlets, crackers and hummus, pineapple chunks and red grapes. Snacks and beer on the sunny, sheltered deck made for a great start to the tournament. The tournament music playlist was based on the theme of birds., i.e. Hummingbird, White Bird, The Bird is the Word etc.
The first game was won by Mr. Wicket whose strategy of bringing up the rear proved fruitful. Mallethead missed a kill shot leaving Mr. Wicket an easy tap for the kill. The participants often struggled to remember the order of play. Lefty and Sticky Wicket provided continuous humorous commentary and unsolicited advice, often teaming up on the shooter.
Game two, played on the reversed course, was won by Wick O'Shay who was left an easy kill shot after Surferino missed trying to kill him.
